This paper represents some suggestions towards discourse-analytic approaches for ESL/EFL education, with the focus on identifying the textual forms which can contribute to the textual difficulty. Textual difficulty/comprehensibility, rather than being purely text-based or reader-dependent, is certainly a matter of interaction between text and reader. Discourse Strategies are techniques or procedures for using language that help a writer convey ideas or information in a logical and/or meaningful way to the audience. Each discourse strategy has a relevant scheme for arranging the ideas and information being conveyed and help to convey different kinds of meaning to an audience.

The paper studies the genre of answering machine messages (AMMs) in English and Greek from a comparative linguistic perspective. The analysis of extensive data in both languages shows that the length of most AMMs is restricted (25 to 30 words) and related to the gender of the caller rather than the language used. It is also found that Greek and English AMMs follow the same generic pattern.
